Gutherson inspires Eels to comfortable win

18 حزيران 2017 10:42

Parramatta Eels moved back into the NRL top eight on Sunday as they ran in four tries to complete a 24-10 victory over St George Illawarra Dragons.

The Eels have no representatives in the State of Origin series this year and they benefitted from that as the Dragons rued the absence of Josh Dugan, Tyson Frizell and Jack De Belin.

Clint Gutherson was pivotal in the Eels' eighth win of the campaign with 14 points, but their win at ANZ Stadium was marred by a serious-looking knee injury to Kaysa Pritchard.

The hooker landed badly in the 24th minute and was taken from the field on a stretcher with a suspected ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

While disappointing, the Eels did not let it affect their game as they led from start to finish against a Dragons side who are now beginning to look over their shoulders after back-to-back defeats.

Gutherson scored both of the Eels' tries in the opening 40 minutes, the first an opportunistic finish after collecting a loose ball, while the second saw him profit from poor handling from the Dragons to scoop up the ball and run the length of the field to touch down.

He then converted second half tries from Michael Jennings and Bevan French as the reshuffled Eels marched on.

For the Dragons there was little to be happy with as they only managed to breach the home defence late in either half.

They will hope for better fortunes next time out against bottom club Newcastle Knights, while the Eels enjoy a rest week.
